New York City Fire and Emergency Services members in New York City are in the top 5% of all US public-sector employees in their respective positions (after the NYPD and the NYPD Police Department). The top 20% of all US public-sector employees earn more than the top 20% of all US public-sector employees in the other major cities.

We’re not sure how the Fire Department salary is supposed to be calculated. It sure looks like it’s based on the total number of firefighters in New York City, but it seems like we’re on the hook for a percentage of the total.
We’re still investigating how that works. We do know that the city is required to provide a certain percentage of its firefighters to the city of New York. One might assume that since NYC is so large, it might also be required to provide a certain percentage of its employees to the city.
New York City is a city of 20 million people, and that seems like a small number. But in reality, NYC is one of the most populous cities in the United States. The city is also home to some of the busiest airports in the world, and a high percentage of NYC firefighters are also officers in the NYPD.
That’s not to say NYC should provide a certain percentage of its employees to the city. It’s just that the city (and the firefighters) would need to be able to offer the city a certain percentage of its employees, just like it can offer a certain percentage of its firefighters. That’s because the firefighters would need to be able to offer the city a certain percentage of its employees, just like the city would need to offer a certain percentage of its employees.
